Lanty L. Smith is a serial entrepreneur with more than 35 years of executive, legal, financial, and operations experience in the manufacturing, financial services, and healthcare industries.
Smith is the founder, Chairman and CEO of Tippet Capital, LLC, an investment and merchant banking firm headquartered in Raleigh, NC.
He is the former Chairman and Interim CEO of Wachovia Corporation, a diversified financial services company which operated the fourth largest commercial bank and the second largest securities brokerage network in the U.S.
Smith is Chairman and CEO of: Scion NeuroStim, LLC, a medical device development company which he co-founded in 2007; AegisCN, LLC, a medical research company focused on neurological pharmaceutical development which he co-founded in 2012; and LadeRx LLC, a medical research and development company in the field of radiology. He is also a director of Piedmont Pharmaceuticals, LLC, a pharmaceutical R&D firm. He is involved in several other start-up companies, with a special focus on innovative energy production and the medical field.
Smith serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Precision Fabrics Group, Inc., which is a leading manufacturer of engineered, high-technology, specification textile products, particularly for medical applications. He organized Precision Fabrics in 1988 to purchase the existing businesses of the Precision Fabrics division of Burlington Industries, Inc., which was the world’s largest textile company. Smith was President of Burlington from 1986 to 1988. He joined Burlington in 1977 as Executive Vice President and Senior General Counsel and then progressively assumed operating responsibilities. Prior to joining Burlington, Mr. Smith was a partner in the international law firm of Jones Day.
Smith serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Duke Management Company, which manages Duke University’s endowment, and formerly served as Chair of the Duke University Board of Trustees. He is a past Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, the Board of Trustees of Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital and the Board of Visitors of the Duke University School of Law and Vice Chair of the Board of Governors of The Center for Creative Leadership and of the North Carolina Health Access Forum. He also served on the Board of Director and as Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee for the Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina, the not-for-profit corporation which owns and operates the Research Triangle Park.
